The new Deftones rarities album has been out for a few weeks now, and while it’s a little pricey, it is a worthwhile purchase for any Deftones fans that have yet to pick it up. The majority of the CD consists of covers of songs from acts such as The Cure, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Duran Duran and Sade. While the bands chosen by Chino and company to cover are certainly diverse, the results tend to lean towards the moody, atmospheric end of the scale, with a definite Team Sleep feel to the material. Surprisingly the few aggressive songs to make the cut are the least interesting of the bunch. Also on hand are three acoustic renditions of Deftones originals and a few other odds and ends. Perhaps best of all, the album comes packaged with a DVD containing every one of the band’s videos as well as behind-the-scenes footage. B-Sides and Rarities presents a slightly different side of the Deftones and should keep any fan of the band entertained until their next studio album.
My only complaint about the collection is the lack of several key Deftones rarities. I’m not sure of the reasons behind the absence of tracks like “Lovers” and “Can’t Even Breathe” but their omission seemed like a good basis for one of these columns. With that said, I present to you seven tracks not found on the B-Sides and Rarities disc. If anyone out there has any other Deftones rarities, feel free to post them as well.
