Following last year’s 3-disc rarities set, this holiday season saw the release of another Nirvana collection. Sliver: The Best of the Box, as the title suggests, is a compilation of the “best” tracks from 2004’s With the Lights Out. For any fan of the band that decided against shelling out for the box set, this is perhaps a worthwhile purchase. A fair number of the noteworthy tracks from the set are included here, and the track “Do Re Mi” is one that no Nirvana fan should be without. The songs span the entire career of the band and allow you to see the evolution of Kurt Cobain’s songwriting abilities. Keep in mind though that the quality of the tracks tends to be pretty rough as they are demos for the most part.
If you do own With the Lights Out, on the other hand, and are considering buying Sliver for the three unreleased tracks, I would recommend against it. The three extra demos included on the album are only average and are a money grab more than anything else. So as a Christmas present to you, and a “screw you” to Courtney Love, I have uploaded the aforementioned tracks and included the links below. Happy holidays and I will return again in the new year.
