Recently when looking through my CD collection I noticed that, with the exception of Metric and Minx (aka Scratching Post), the groups I follow are predominately male. Since then I have been making an effort to search out female-fronted acts and thought I would share a couple of my finds this week.
Alice in Videoland is a Swedish band that I discovered through an HMV listening post. The write up for the group described their sound as, “a unique combination of styles all their own, they mix electro, 80's rock, dance and pop with a style and vocals that call to Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett and Gwen Stefani!” Based on my first listen, I probably would’ve described the band as Aqua for the electro/industrial crowd. That might not sound like a good thing necessarily, but with songs this catchy, its hard not to like this group.
The Birthday Massacre are a local band that formed in London in 2000 and relocated to Toronto not long after. During their time together they’ve opened up for Mindless Self Indulgence among others, and are currently about to embark on their own headlining tour. Their sound is something along the lines of Orgy with female vocals or as their label puts it, “A captivating hybrid of 80's electronica and aggressive guitars, curiously fused with a cinematic quality of melodic progressions.” If that seems like your type of thing, then give TBM a listen. They’re definitely a band to watch for.
