Brief Review of the Departed

Posted by phduffy on 2006-10-17 23:36:43
liked it, but I’m not sure that Scorcese deserves the accolades he’s getting. I realize that a big part of directing is getting the best performance out of your actors. And he did a good (great?) job there. However, another part is in how you tell and shoot the story. And virtually every major scene in this movie is filmed almost identically to Infernal Affairs. The scenes up on the warehouse roof, the elevator, the scenes at police headquarters, the scene with the envelope…

The biggest difference was the tacked on ending. It makes for a very different tone. Ironically, the DVD of Please Police Me has an alternate ending that was added to please Malaysian government censors, who didn’t like the original ending. Without giving too much away, the results of that ending are similar to the ending of The Departed.

I’d say see it if you haven’t seen Infernal Affairs, but if you have, wait for the DVD.
