If you're going to buy something pricey that you don't need (say some speakers, a watch, or a purse) a great way to do it is to put away a small amount of money every paycheque ($20 to $60 or so) and just let that build up over time. You can also add in any unexpected windfalls there (say from selling old DVDs or something similar).
