As Canadians, i'm sure that some (if not most of you) have heard the ignorant things that Americans have said about Canadians. Don't get me wrong, there are stupid things that Canadians have said about Americans as well, but for the sake of my story, I have to point out the prior.
Have you ever heard the stories about an American saying something like this?:
"Do you guys get cold living in those igloos?"
"Don't you get tired of it snowing all year around?"
Yes, I know that these seem somewhat unbelievable, and until it happened to me I didn't believe that people like that truly existed.
So, I was on vacation in Jamaica this past week visiting some family. I'm a Jamaican, Indian, German, Irish, Chinese (yes big mix but true, also necessary to understand the conversation). Anyhow, I was priveleged enough to meet this one American woman while doing the tourist thing. This was our conversation:
American: "Where are you from?"
Me: "Toronto, Ontario"
A: "Do you like it there?"
M: "Yeah, it's nice, the weather isn't nearly as nice as this though"
A: "Wow, I must say, you speak english very well"
M: "Why do you say that?"
A: "Well, I never knew that they taught people like you to speak english there"
A: "I thought Canada only had white people that spoke english"
M: "It's my first language; I was born there; it's the only language I speak"
The conversation kinda stopped there when I couldn't stop laughing. Then I noticed that she wasn't joking by the perplexed expression on her face followed by the fact that her next comment was, "Well, that's great that they let you guys talk our language"
