|10: Castlevania 2|
This game is different from 1, 3 and 4, but I like it best. It mixes side scrolling with some RPG elements... and it's great.
9: Double: Mario and Duck Hunt
My version of the NES didn't come with these, but they were still great. Unfortunately there aren't very many great light gun games, but Duck Hunt was good. And Mario was such an improvement in gameplay compared to what was on the Atari and C64 that your mind had to be blown by it.
Although we don't ever need to hear the words "Your princess is in another castle" again.
8: Techmo Super Bowl
The greatest football game of all times. Take your Madden's and ESPNs. I'll just use Bo Jackson to kick your ass. With one of my 4 plays.
This game invented a whole new genre. The genre is a small one (really, the only games in it are Metroid and Castlevania ones) but this was still great. Surprise ending, which you only got if you finished it fast enough (which I never did).
6: Final Fantasy 1
This game was a pain in the ass, as it was hard. It was also awesome. The first game I remember where you could upgrade your character's class, and enough classes that there were lots of different combinations you could play the game with. (Although I think most people went White Mage, Black Mage, Kung Fu Fighter dude and Knightly dude)
5: Megaman 2
All the Megaman games are pretty good, but this is the best. Mostly for Metal Man.
4: Mike Tyson's Punch Out!
They don't make games like this anymore. Especially now that Tyson is a convicted rapist. Nevertheless, they took a real life athlete, and put him in a sweet arcade type game. And it was hard! And Don Flamingo sucked, and it felt good shutting Hypo's big mouth!
3: Dragon Warrior 4
In my mind, this is the greatest non-strategy based RPG of all time. It came out after the SNES had been released, so it sort of got lost. DW1 was important in terms of being the first RPG for the NES, but this is so much better. The mulitple chapter structure, the length of the game, the cool plot..
2: Bionic Commando
I can't believe how much fun this game is. You can earn continues, and you have to pay attention in order to get the best weapons.
Plus, you can't jump!!!
1: Super Mario 3
They made a movie about this game! And the game was amazing. Nothing before or since has been as kickass as this. The only pain in the ass was the lack of a save, but that was fixed in the SNES and GBA versions.
And that's it! I didn't include Zelda, cause I didn't feel like it his its stride until the SNES... and I left out Contra, Blades of Steel, Ice Hockey and many more.
What did I miss?
What's the most underated game?
The Sega Master system is up next!
