Success of Rap and Hip-hop

I don't know when I started to think about this, but I wondered if rap music, and hip-hop would enjoy the success that it does today without the music video.

If they couldn't sell their image of women and money, drugs and sex, which barring a few exceptions as I'm sure there are, defines the majority of the genre, do you think kids everywhere would adopt the music as readily as they do now?

I personally don't think so. Or don't think that the artists that are out there and enjoying that success wouldn't be around anyhow. The artists that don't really rely on that might still be able to enjoy some success, but without all these little 'gangsta' outfitted kids all over the place, mindless mimicking what they see on the 'T.V.', I don't know that their music would succeed.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?
